Eight games into the Premier League season and managers are starting to find out what their best side is. Chelsea are currently sitting in 2nd place behind London neighbours Arsenal, but there is one man who isn’t getting a look in at Stamford Bridge – Michael Essien. Here are three reasons why he should be looking for a move this January.
1) Competition
The Chelsea squad is packed with talent in the midfield areas. The presence of Juan Mata, Oscar, Eden Hazard, Willian, Andre Schurrle and Kevin de Bruyne has meant that Frank Lampard has had to take up a more defensive role next to Ramires.
The domino effect of this is that Essien, as well as Jon Obi Mikel, have been left fighting for even a sniff of action this season, and the latter is winning it.
Essien is yet to appear, while Mikel has made four appearances.
David Luiz can also be deployed in the anchor role.
2) Age
At 30, Essien isn’t getting any younger. While the likes of John Terry, Samuel Eto’o and Frank Lampard are all involved in the team despite their aging legs, sitting on the bench is doing nothing for his career nor his reputation.
Essien is nearing the end of his prime and to waste that would be a great shame. He probably has about six to seven years left in his tank, should injuries and the like stay away, so he should be looking for first team action.
3) Not in the plans
Let’s face it, the Ghana international is not in Mourinho’s plans. The amount of faces that are competing for a spot, as mentioned above, have also been added to by a wave of rumours – Nemanja Matic springs to mind and it’s unliely that we will see Essien in a Chelsea shirt again.
