Last summer we saw Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho scraping the barrel to find a striker suitable of leading his line to the Premier League title. He had Fernand Torres and Demba Ba both at the club, as well as young sensation Romulu Lukaku, but he sent the latter out on loan to Everton and drafted in Samuel Eto’o. A poor decision, in my eyes. Anyway, he may have a chance to make amends as the Mirror are reporting that he could be looking to sign Wayne Rooney when the January window opens.
The Manchester United forward has been impeccable this season and looks like his former self, rather than the frustrated player we have seen over the last year or so.
So far in the Premier League he has scored eight goals in his 13 appearances and has created a further 28 chances. He is flourishing in his more offensive role, rather than being pushed wide or dropped deeper.
His pass accuracy has dipped since last year, but his shot accuracy (61%) and his duel success (42%) have both risen.
He can play with either foot, can score from any angle on the pitch and is also good with his head. Rooney has proved just how strong of a player he is by scoring 164 Premier League goals – the fifth most in the history of the English topflight.
If Chelsea were to land the United forward and flog Ba in the new year then I can’t help but put them as favourites for the title, despite Arsenal’s current lead.
