Flicking through the Tottenham squad you would be excused to think that Spurs are a side fighting for the top of the Premier League. As it is, their struggles at both end of the pitch sees them sitting in seventh going into the new year and with a new boss in charge in the shape of Tim Sherwood. Their defensive organisation has been almost non-existent this term, so it comes as no surprise that the north London side have been linked with a move for Mancheter United’s Alex Buttner. But do they really need him?
Jan Vertonghen can play at left-back, though he is by no means a natural in that position. His lanky frame makes it harder for him to get up and down the flank efficiently and his delivery into the box is somewhat varied in quality.
Kyle Naughton is the man who has occupied the full-back role recently but fingers have been pointed at him in regards of his displays.
They also have Danny Rose, who has been out injured for a lot of the season. Rose is seen as first choice by many Spurs fans, me included, and is probably the best option right now.
Signing Buttner would allow Vertonghen to lead from the middle of defence and give them options down the flank, so I think it would be a good move.
