Is Liverpool’s Unstable Backline Costing Them Valuable Points?

A day after Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with Aston Villa, the Reds seemed pretty happy with the way they came from behind to salvage a point. While one point is better than none, it is games like these that Liverpool could be left wanting at the end of the season and see them as lost opportunities.  With everything seeming to gel within the team, it is hard to find a weakness. Yet I believe it comes down to a rotating backline.

It has come as no surprise that Liverpool are title contenders this year, but this issue of unstable back four has cost Liverpool some valuable points against opponents. Looking at their season so far they are sitting on a total of six clean sheets, ranking them 13th.

Brendan Rodger’s does have a tough choice when selecting his defensive line with a barrage of world class players that should be playing. As well as upcoming young players that are looking for first team chances at his disposal. In the meantime to overcome this selection issues Rodgers has instigated a sort of rotation policy trying to give his defensive squad games.

However this may hurt Liverpool come the end of the season. As the players that are being rotated are finding it hard to build up chemistry within the reds defensive line. And this is costing them valuable points, in what is a very close league title race.

Liverpool has already dropped points against Southampton, Hull and now Villa this year in games they were predicted to pick up three points for. From the outside looking in, and in comparison to the teams above Liverpool, this seems to be a large weak point in the Merseysiders game.

A weakness they will need to solve to keep in contention for a top four placing.
