With a lot of talk about the form of Chelsea’s Eden Hazard and discussions on whether or not he could potentially be the best player in the world, I thought that I would look at whether he is currently the best, in his role, in the Premier League.
If you had asked me this question last season then I would have said that you would have had a point, but I think there were a few operating in a stronger way. Now though, under the guidance of Jose Mourinho, I would say that yes, Hazard is the best player in his position, or at least role, in the English top tier.
Let’s take a minute to run through a couple of attacking midfielders who I would rate in his bracket. Arsenal have two in Mesut Ozil and Santi Cazorla, but neither of those hold the work rate that Hazard does. Hazard has also created more chances than the two, as well as having a higher duel success and has scored more goals than the two put together.
So that rules them out.
Manchester City have David Silva and Samir Nasri, and although the latter is probably the closest in terms of form this season for me, he is now injured and like the aforementioned players does not offer as much defensively as Hazard. As before, Hazard has created more than both of them and scored more than both combined.
That leaves me with Juan Mata, but due to his circumstances this season I have to say that Hazard is far ahead in terms of this season.
A lot of his progression is thanks to Mourinho I think and I for one hope it continues.
