Watching Manchester City vs Chelsea last night, I couldn’t help but wonder what might have been if my club, Manchester United, had signed Nemanja Matic ahead of the Blues in the January transfer window. He really was outstanding, and I am convinced that David Moyes and co will regret not landing the Serbia international come the end of the season, despite making a big signing in Juan Mata.
We, meaning United, have struggled in the middle of the pitch this season and many now believe that will be sorted with the arrival of the Spaniard. However, I believe there is much more to this, and Matic could have been the problem solver.
Making his first Premier League start of the season, Matic calmly dictated the game from a deep position on the box and easily stifled Yaya Toure, which is no mean feat.
Matic made 10 clearances and two interceptions while he bossed the aerial duels with 4/5 headers won. He dispossessed Toure on numerous occasions and he looked strong going forward, winning 3/5 of his take ons and smashing the bar with his only shot of the game.
For me he would have been the perfect player to come in and run the United midfield, and I hope we don’t rue not going in for him.
