According to reports from the Daily Star, Arsenal are keeping tabs on Southampton’s injured striker Jay Rodriguez. The Saints forward has scored 17 goals this season but his campaign is over due to a knee injury he picked up against Manchester City at the weekend. Here are three reasons why Arsene Wenger and his Gunners should forget about signing him.
1) flash in the pan
The former Burnley man has had an impressive season, there is no doubting that. However, for a side who want to be winning the league, Arsenal need to be looking at a striker who has delivered on the top stage consistently over a long period of time.
This has been his first successful spell in the Premier League and no one can be sure he will ever match this.
2) fans want a big name
Similarly to the first point, I think Arsenal fans expect a little bit more from the summer transfer market. Mesut Ozil signed in the summer and the fans were excited about what he could do for them, but Rodriguez doesn’t carry that same feeling.
3) different type of forward
For me I think Arsenal need a quick forward who can get in behind the defenders. Think Sergio Aguero, Luis Suarez or Daniel Sturridge, rather than Olivier Giroud. Rodriguez is a strong player who is good in the air, but I think Arsenal should be aiming towards a small, more nimble presence.
