The Independent reports that Liverpool are nervously waiting on the extent of Daniel Sturridge’s hamstring injury, after the striker was assessed by Liverpool medics on Monday. If the club’s worst fears are realised, then the 24-year-old will have no further part to play in Liverpool’s quest for the Premier League title this campaign. But just how damaging would his absence be in their pursuit of glory?
Sturridge has helped himself to 20 Premier League goals this season and his telepathic partnership with Luis Suarez has returned an incredible 49 goals to date.
Sturridge started the season on fire whilst Suarez was serving his 10-match ban from the previous campaign. The England international has provided endless pace, flair and a unerring composure in front of goal.
His absence would be most felt when second place Chelsea visit Anfield. John Terry and Gary Cahill have been the outstanding defensive partnership of the season, but even they would be relieved at only having to contain the threat of Suarez.
However Liverpool can still look to players such as Raheem Sterling and Philippe Coutinho to link-up with Suarez. The pair have been exceptional as Liverpool go in search of an eleventh consecutive victory in the Premier League. Any team would miss Sturridge with the form he has been in, but Brendan Rodgers will be hoping his other stars can step up to the plate – just like they have all season long.
