Manchester United, and David Moyes in particular, had a day to forget at Goodison Park this afternoon. The Red Devils were pulverised by Roberto Martinez’s men and lost the tie 2-0. Here are four players who should take the blame for the poor result.
1) Nani
Given a rare start in the United midfield, the Portugal international hardly got a sniff of the ball.
Every time he was in possession he looked to do too much and ultimately hindered his team-mates. Unsurprisingly, he was substituted off in the second half.
2) Phil Jones
Lukaku is a powerful player who likes to challenge opponents physically, and Phil Jones failed to live up to the Belgian’s strength. Not only was he outmuscled, out-paced and out worked, but he also gave away a silly penalty which started the Everton scoring.
A rest is needed I think.
3) Wayne Rooney
When United need a leader in the side, they usually look to Wayne Rooney. The forward was diabolical this afternoon though as the Everton fans hurled abuse at him. His touch was off, he played with his head down and continually got caught napping.
4) Alex Buttner
He’s no Patrice Evra, that’s for sure. He looks to squeeze too tight and is rash in his challenges, which leaves his colleagues exposed a lot of the time. He also switched off for Everton’s second, playing Kevin Mirallas onside and allowing him to score.
