Manchester United: Sign Strootman, Offload Cleverley And Play A Midfield Trio Next Season

After it was confirmed that the next Manchester United boss would be Louis van Gaal, here are a few things that I would do if I were in his shoes, concentrating on the midfield.

Before anything, I would be looking to sign Kevin Strootman. The Holland international has obviously worked with van Gaal and is ideal to come in and sort out the United midfield problem.

He is an energetic central player who is as creative as he is technically blessed. This season he played 25 games for Roma – it would have been more but for injury – and claimed six assists. He also scored five goals, which is a very strong return considering.

He made two key passes per game and completed over 88% of his overall balls, the same percentage as Michael Carrick.

I would also offload Cleverley, as he would naturally be behind Strootman, Carrick and Marouane Fellaini in the pecking order. Cleverley was once seen as an extremely bright talent but has failed to live up to the tag.

Lastly, I would play a midfield trio with the three midfielders mentioned, and scrap the 4-2-2 formation. Yes it worked under Sir Alex Ferguson, but football moves on and I think van Gaal needs to freshen it up with a 4-3-3.
