According to reports, Manchester United have agreed a deal to sign Toni Kroos this summer. The Germany international will add some much needed guile in the United midriff and will be a breath of fresh air in Louis van Gaal’s side. Following on from that, here are four players who could follow him into Old Trafford.
1) Mats Hummels – Borussia Dortmund
A giant in the air and a maestro on the ball, Hummels is entering the peak of his career but in my opinion needs a new club to reach that. He has struggled with injury and I think being the heartbeat of the United defence could allow him to flourish.
2) Ezequiel Garay – Benfica
Although probably a bit older and less able with the ball at his feet compared to Hummels, Garay is still one of the top centre-halves in Europe. He is quick and is superb in the tackle, and could prove to be a fine partner of Hummels should they arrive at the club.
3) Paul Pogba – Juventus
Having let him leave the club on a free, it may be a bitter pill for the Red Devils to swallow to look to get him back in, but just look how well it has worked for Chelsea and Nemanja Matic.
Pogba would add power, aggression and athleticism into the midfield.
4) Luke Shaw – Southampton
He’s strong, energetic and reads the game like a defender half of his age. Shaw is still only 18 but is taking the Premier League by storm and for me is the natural successor of Patrice Evra.
