Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has identified Schalke defender Fabian Schar as a viable transfer target and is ready to test Swiss club Basel’s resolve with a bid for the defender in an attempt lure him in the January transfer window, according to Daily Star.
The Gunners decided against signing a center back in the summer after letting Vermaelen and Ignasi Miquel to join Barcelona and Norwich, while only adding Southampton’s Calum Chambers as a back up to first choice German-French pair. However, Wenger’s thin squad has already been stretched with injuries to Debuchy and Monreal, which again leaves Chambers as the back up option for several positions.
It now looks like Wenger is preparing a move for Schar during the January window. The defender who is valued at £10m by Basel has bags of potential and could very well be a long term solution for the club. Schar’s current contract is due next summer and any bid in the region of £10m would tempt the Swiss club to sell him for profit as several other clubs including Arsenal’s rivals Tottenham are on the lookout for him.
Standing tall at 6’2, Schar is brilliant in air and in tackling set piece situations. His willingness to put himself on the line for those crucial 50-50 challenges could be a blessing in disguise for Arsenal.
