Relief For Manchester United: Real Madrid Target To Extend Stay At Old Trafford

De Gea Set to Stay At Manchester United

Manchester United’s star goalkeeper David De Gea is set to stay at  Old Trafford as he is close to agreeing a contract extension with the red devils. The Spanish goalkeeper who was on top of Real Madrid’s list of transfer targets to be purchased this season had previously dismissed all speculations of a move away from the English Premier League side.

The Manchester side were keen on keeping the 24 year old who has had an amazing season with the club so far and is a fine prospect for the future. Real Madrid has shown a keen interest of signing De Gea as they consider him as a perfect replacement for their veteran goalkeeper Iker Casillas. The Champions League winners have not given up yet on their hopes of bringing the Spaniard to the Bernabeu and might still go ahead and try to make United an irresistible offer.

Further, Manchester United have gone ahead and already made a precautionary purchase in the form of ex-Barcelona star goalkeeper Victor Valdes on Wednesday, in case the Spaniard changes his mind at the last minute. The 32 year old who left the Spanish giants at the end of last season was available on a free transfer and United grabbed the opportunity with both hands. Valdes has been training with the United side for the past few months and now he was finally offered a contract by the club. Valdes has been one of Barcelona’s most successful keepers and adding him to the Manchester United squad is a feather in the cap for Dutch manager Louis van Gaal who has clearly shown his intent of winning trophies with the English side.

Van Gaal had made many major purchases this season with a view of rebuilding the team after last season’s horrific performance under David Moyes. Extending De Gea’s contract and the signing of Valdes would now strengthen his ambitions of qualifying for the Champions League next season and making a long successful run in the FA Cup as well.
