Arsenal Transfers: Arsene Wenger Planning A Suprise Bid For Dortmund Star

According to Daily Star, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger & co are planning  a surprise bid to acquire the signature of Borussia Dortmund’s star midfielder and German International Ilkay Gundogan this month. The midfielder’s current contract with Borussia Dortmund expires at the end of next season and there are no signs of Gundogan signing a new contract with them.

Dortmund have earlier warned Gundogan that he will be sold if he refuses to agree to a fresh deal which will extend his stay at Westfalenstadion. It is also learnt that Gundogan is unlikely to stay with the club which might also see their stars Marco Reus and Mats Hummels leave the club along with their manager Jurgen Klopp. Gundogan was back to his best after returning from a knee injury that him out of action for over six months that saw him miss the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Wenger is keeping a close eye on the 24-year-old’s situation and could end up in launching a £16m bid for him in the January window or in the summer. It is not only Arsenal, but also Manchester United who are in the race to sign the midfielder who had publicly revealed his desire to play in the Premier League. Dortmund are currently struggling in the relegation zone of the Bundesliga.

If Gundogan makes a switch to the Emirates Stadium, it could be the departure of Mikel Arteta or Mathieu Flamini from the North London Club. Arsenal are currently struggling to make it to the top 4 this season after some inconsistent performance from them which put them sixth on the table with 33 points, just 3 away from fourth placed Southampton. Arsenal are missing the services of some players who were down injured during the crucial part of the season. The list includes the likes of Mesut Ozil, Theo Walcott, Jack Wilshere etc. (update: Mesut Ozil is fit and may feature in upcoming games)
