Summer Transfers: Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal asks the board to bid £30m for French superstar

Manchester United will surely be busy in the transfer market once again, at the end of the season. A huge amount of cash was spent last summer after the arrival of Louis van Gaal at the club, yet, the performances have not been up to the mark and an intense battle is going on still, for a top four finish. Now, El Mundo Deportivo has reported on Thursday that the Dutchman has targeted Real Madrid’s French defender Raphael Varane, who is considereed to be third choice central defender at the Bernabeu, at the moment. The 21 year old, who falls behind in the pecking order to Pepe and Sergio Ramos could make the move to Old Trafford for guaranteed first team football.

Premier League rivals Arsenal and Chelsea have also been linked to the Frenchman, but El Mundo claim United are set to make a bid of €40m (£30m)  for Varane, who is one of Didier Deschamps’ key players in the French national side. Italian manager Carlo Ancelotti’s, who favours the other defenders, does not provide the youngster with similar amount of opportunities with Real Madrid and a move away from the Bernabeu soon, is surely on the cards. Jonny Evans, Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo have all played as center-backs this season, for van Gaal and have failed to make any major impression on him, which could also encourage the move further, as the Premier League giants look to fill in the defensive void.
