Super Mario Gomez

With Euro 2012 lurking around the corner it seems an ideal time to take a look at a pick of Europe’s top talents, in particular the goal scorers that hope to fire their nation to glory in Poland and Ukraine this summer.

A genuine goal scorer for both club and country Mario Gomez is a threat with either foot and aerially. Gomez’s anticipation of crosses and passes often mean he is in the right place at the right time with a killer touch.

Gomez goes in to Euro 2012 after a phenomenal season on a personal level, he scored 41 goals in 52 appearances in all competitions however his huge goal tally wasn’t enough to secure success for Bayern Munich; second in the Bundesliga and German Cup to Borussia Dortmund before a Champions League final penalty shootout defeat to Chelsea in their own stadium.

Unlike many players around the world Mario Gomez is able to replicate his club form at international level; 202 goals in 341 club games alongside an international record of 22 goals in 52 appearances for Germany. However, it hasn’t all been plain sailing for Gomez with Germany; he was an unused substitute in the quarter final and semi final four years ago at Euro 2008. Gomez did come off the bench in the final but couldn’t prevent Germany losing 1-0 to Spain.

Now an integral part of Joachim Low’s young German side Mario Gomez stars as part of a nucleus of 8 Bayern Munich players. During qualification for Euro 2012 Gomez achieved the extraordinary feat of scoring against every opponent in the group despite being second choice behind Miroslav Klose.

There is no doubt amongst fans that Mario Gomez, favourite to be top scorer, will be a threat this summer if he and his fellow Bayern Munich team mates can get over their disappointments and focus on German success on Poland and Ukraine.
