Are Chelsea right to offer Lampard a one-year deal?

Chelsea star Frank Lampard was the hero once again in his sides 2-1 win over Everton on Sunday and again proved that he is a valuable member of the squad. The Blues stalwart netted a brace in the win over the Merseysiders after the west London outfit managed to weather the early Toffees pressure following Steven Pienaar’s opener.

It was another example as to why the Blues should offer the goal-scoring midfielder a new contract ahead of the January transfer window. With Lampard’s contract expiring over the summer, he is free to discuss a potential deal next month with teams outside the confines of England regarding a possible transfer in June.

Many a Chelsea fan have called on the board to offer the club’s stand-in captain a new deal, with the possibility of the team losing one of their prized assets a distinct possibility, much like Didier Drogba last season.

However, at 34-year-old, Lampard isn’t getting any younger and it is fair to say his best years are most certainly behind him, and taking this into consideration it’s reported that Chelsea are prepared to only offer him a new one-year contract.

Although the midfielder is supposedly keen on extending his stay in west London by two years, the club are right to only offer a 12 month deal. His influence may still be high, but his sell-on value is diminishing at an exponential rate.

It’s likely that Chelsea will persist with their one year approach, which is the well within their rights to do so, and in my opinion, rightly so. His age, coupled with his input slowly dwindling, it’s no shock the club are taking the Manchester United approach in the pursuit to secure him, until 2014 anyway.
