Is Wim Jonk the best name in football?
I mean the Dutch just come out with some absolute beauties don’t they? Norwich’s new signing is called Ricky van Wolfswinkel. Ricky. van. Wolfswinkel. That is bloody brilliant.
Wim Jonk? It’s getting out of hand now.
Despite the fantastic name Jonk can proudly say that the goal he scored in the UEFA Cup final is what he will be remembered most fondly for. Not the name.
Jonk’s sumptuous screamer from around 35 yards gave Ajax the lead in the first leg of the final against Torino. The game itself finished 2-2 but Ajax won the tie on away goals as the second leg finished 0-0.
How silly was it when finals used to be played over two legs? One game and the best teams wins is how it should be a final.
Anyway, ol’ Wim certainly hit this one sweetly. His starting position is quite central but when he lets loose the ball swerves to the right and flies into the top right hand corner. An true belter and I bet Wim felt good after that one.
Jonk’s dream strike inspired Ajax to UEFA Cup glory and for that reason his name will live long in the memory of football fans all over the world.
