Tottenham set sights on Wigan midfielder after FA Cup victory

Tottenham Hotspur have made Wigan Athletic FA Cup winner James McCarthy a summer transfer target as Sandro remains sidelined.

Spurs may have to fork out around £10million for the Cup Final star as part of a summer signing spree.

Tottenham Chairman Daniel Levy is heading up a chase for young stars and Wigan’s 22-year-old Republic of Ireland ace is thought to be a prime target.

McCarthy helped his current club win the FA Cup yesterday but is likely to leave the Latics in the summer if Wigan get relegated to the Championship.

Spurs have been tracking the skilful midfielder for months and think he can bring a new dynamism to a midfield that has been hit by injuries this season.

Brazilian Sandro’s absence has been a major blow for the North London club while England international Scott Parker has battled back but has struggled to find the kind of form he was producing before he was sidelined himself.

McCarthy has been playing at Premier League level for three seasons and was one of a host of Wigan players to shine at Wembley yesterday against Manchester City

Spurs are thought to be in pole position for his signature but Newcastle are also keeping an eye on the youngster.

Meanwhile Spurs are also said to be interested in Hamburg’s South Korean Heung-Min Son as a replacement for Gareth Bale and lead the hunt for Blackpool wide man Thomas Ince.
