3 Big Money Strikers Trying To Make Their Name In The Premier League
It is hard enough to get going in the Premier League without someone paying millions of pounds to acquire your services. Such fees automatically raise expectations, and there have been many examples of players who have found it hard to shake off the pressure that a huge price tag can bring. This is especially true of strikers, who are judged primarily on how many times they find the net.
Although still early days, here is a quick look at three big-money signings from this summer and how they have fared so far during their debut season in England:
Pablo Osvaldo – £12.8 million +
The least expensive of the three highlighted players but by no means cheap, Osvaldo joined Southampton to link up again with his former manager Mauricio Pochettino, who he had previously worked under at Espanyol. The Argentine-born Italian forward scored his first goal for Saints at the weekend in a 2-0 home win against Crystal Palace, but the fans at St Mary’s will be hoping to see a lot more from the 27-year-old.
Alvaro Negredo – £16.4 million +
The former Sevilla striker did not start his first few games for Manchester City, but he has since become more prominent with Sergio Aguero struggling with injury. His first goal for the club turned out to be nothing more than a consolation in a 3-2 defeat at Cardiff, but the 28-year-old found the net again the following week in a 2-0 home win against Hull. And with two assists in their 4-1 derby victory over Manchester United, some City fans may well argue he was worth every penny.
Roberto Soldado – £26 million
A man known simply as a goalscorer, Tottenham parted with a large chunk of cash to get the 28-year-old Spaniard to White Hart Lane. Two strikes in the Premier League and a Europa League brace at Dinamo Tbilisi leave him on four goals in just six games for Spurs at the time of writing. Looking at his record at past clubs suggests there are plenty more to come, with an incredible 81 goals in 141 games in all competitions for Valencia. One may wonder why Soldado only has 12 caps for his country, but the striker makes the most of every appearance for Spain and has currently scored seven times for La Roja.
