As a result of injury and poor form, as well as the impressive displays from Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny, Thomas Vermaelen’s Arsenal career has stagnated somewhat over the last year. He has gone from one of their key players and their authorative skipper to a crocked substitute keeping the likes of Lukasz Fabianski company on the bench. But now he is being offered a potential new lease of life, according to talkSPORT, as Inter are apparently interested in his services.
It seems sensible, on paper anyway, that the Arsenal skipper could find pastures new away from the hustle and bustle of the Premier League. Serie A is a defender’s dream and he would be pairing up with the likes of Juan Jesus, Andrea Ranocchia and Hugo Campagnaro, all of whom have former Inter’s back three this season.
The three central defenders is something that could suit Vermaelen. He is one of the few top central defenders that stand under 6ft and that provides him with added agility and a quicker turnaround time. His intelligence off the ball is also up there with the best, and he completed 86% of his passes last time out.
It’s unlikely that he will get much of a look in at Arsenal until the new year, and by that time Arsene Wenger may be drafting in some additional defensive outlets. For me, if the offer is there and all the off-field issues are agreed, then Inter look the ideal home for Vermaelen.
Gooners, what do you think?
