Tom Cleverley really is a marmite man. While some slate him as a useless player who offers almost nothing into the Manchester United midfield, others see him as a young English player who is yet to hit his potential. I am leaning towards the former, however, and I would suggest that it is time that he was shipped out to make room for some real midfield talent.
Cleverley is a player who likes to sit in the central areas and causally pop passes to whoever his closest to him. He keep things moving at a reasonable speed and can also tackle, but that’s about it.
He doesn’t run with the ball, he doesn’t offer anything in the opposition half and he is ultimately taking up space in the middle.
For me United need to sign a player like Ander Herrera, while also utilise Shinji Kagawa’s presence. The two offer huge amounts of creativity and energy and are more threatening than Cleverley in almost every aspect.
Moyes, for me, would do well to get rid of Cleverley in the new year to clear up funds and some space to reinforce with some real, world class talent to drag them up the table and cement their Premier League title challenge.
