Chelsea can still win the English Premier League

Chelsea’s recent deservedly and convincingly defeats of Premier League champion Leicester City (3-0) and rival Manchester United (4-0) respectively – which saw them leapfrogged into the fourth position on the table – has suddenly made them one of the top favourites for the Premier League title again.

Chelsea
Chelsea

The London club humbled their former coach Jose Mourinho when he returned to the Stamford Bridge with his new club in what was only his second trip to the club as an opposition manager.

The Blues were among the top five clubs favoured to win the title at the start of this season but later missed out on a position in that category after a string of poor results that increased .

Antonio Conte got introduced to the Premier League with three straight wins but had a taste of what the Premier League really is after a frustrating draw against  Swansea (2-2) was followed by  disappointing defeats to both  Liverpool (1-2) and Arsenal (0-3).

But he was able to warm himself back to the heart of the fans after rumour of his potential sack with another three wins consecutively. His managerial ability will be put to test again when his side face a double-header with Tottenham and Manchester City on November 26th and December 3rdrespectively.

However, Chelsea’s last two results have made football pundits to consider them once again as a top contender for the title pegging their odd to win the title at 6/1. But it might be too early and  even erroneous to ascertain their title credentials based on the results gotten from those matches given the fact the two they played against – Leicester City and Manchester United were not in their best form.

United have been complacent and have also been sloppy in their performances despite the presence of the world most expensive player, Paul Pogba and one of the world deadly strikerZlatan Ibrahimovic in the team. The same could be said of the defending champion Leicester who has also been finding it difficult to pull a string of decent results together.

The battle among the top five clubs is presently tough with just a point and goal difference separating them. Chelsea have struggled against more organized teams this season but the title can still become theirs to lose if they could maintain their good performances so far and get good results. It is obvious other teams will not rest on their oars to lay hold of the title. The season is still a long way to go.

EPL Week 9: Chelsea vs Manchester United Preview

Chelsea

The big game happening this Sunday is Chelsea vs Manchester United and it will be the first time that Jose Mourinho will face his old club since he was sacked last season. Chelsea has a great record against Man U as they are unbeaten since 2012. They will be hoping that the run continues to prove that they got it right by sacking the “special one”. I do not expect it to be a high scoring match as the last eight encounters have been won by a single goal apart from one game. New Chelsea manager Antonio Conte is still finding his feet in the Premier League but will have his players fired up for this battle between two of the best teams in the league.

Chelsea Recent Form

The Blues under their new manager did not get off to the best of starts with players struggling to adapt to the manager’s new tactical system. In recent games, though their form has improved with wins over Hill City along with Leicester City and will be hoping that it continues on Sunday. Man U will be a real test to see how far they have come since the arrival of Italian manager Conte. So far this season they have not done well against the best teams in the league. They have lost to both Arsenal and Liverpool so will want to show that they are genuine title contenders by beating the Red Devils.

Manchester United Form

manchester united

After a great start to the campaign Man United’s form has dropped in recent weeks. They managed a respectable draw at Liverpool but followed that up with an another draw against Stoke City. Before those two games, it looked like Mourinho had managed to find his best team as they thrashed last year’s champions Leicester City. They will need a big performance from record buy Pogba if they are going to get anything from the game. After a slow start, the player seems to be finding his feet in the league and it will be up to him to give the leadership that the Red Devils have been missing in recent season.

Injuries and Suspensions

Chelsea will be without both Willian and Oscar who are both in Brazil on compassionate leave due to deaths in their families.and it is not known if either will return back in time to play in the game.John Obi Mikel, CescFabregas, and BranislavIvanovic will all face late fitness tests due to suffering from knocks in earlier matches.

Manchester United are in slightly better shape with regards injuries as they just have out Anthony Martial and Morgan Schneiderlin with both players suffering from muscle and knee injuries. Defender Phil Jones is a long-term injury and not expected back anytime soon but there is good news on HenrikhMkhitaryan as he is expected back from injury. Mourinho will be hoping that the team does not suffer from any more injuries when they play Fenerbahce in the Europa League on Thursday.

Chelsea vs Manchester United Prediction

As we have seen with all the teams that compete in the Europa League the players struggle to be fully match fit in time to play on Sunday. With Chelsea having the home advantage I am predicting that they will win 1 – 0. However, both managers like to set up their teams to be defensive so it could end up in a 0 – 0 draw. Cole Signs With Celtic

Carlton Cole

Celtic have signed experienced striker, Carlton Cole after a training audition that has lasted over the past several weeks. Cole’s deal runs until 2017. The 32- year- old striker formerly played in the English Premier League with West Ham United and Chelsea FC. Cole made his earned salary in his prime while he was with West Ham, having 259 appearances and 57 goals for the Irons from 2006-2015.

Cole is a large presence at the striker position, boasting a 6’3” frame with massive strength. Although not the quickest and most finesse of strikers, Cole will compliment the other attackers on the Celtic squad using his size and strength to draw defenders in closer, creating more space for strikers like Leigh Griffiths, and Anthony Stokes.

When Cole spoke with the press after he signed his contract, he wanted to make sure he pointed out that it wasn’t about the money; but the pride of putting on the Hoops kit:

“It was the same at West Ham, if you put on that shirt and you wear it with pride, the fans would take to you and you would get a good rapport with the fans.
“That’s what I’m here for, I can see the same sort of thing at Celtic.”

Former Celtic boss, Neil Lennon has said that he was interested in bringing the striker to his new club, Bolton. But with Cole certain to make a move outside of his hometown of London for the first time, he wanted a new experience and a city that felt like home.

While it seems as though the striker found his “home away from home”, he may have to wait to make his debut with the Celts while he continues to heal from a nagging leg injury he picked up while in training during his audition. Cole says he seems to be making  progress towards returning to match fitness, something for Celtic fans to keep an eye out for within the coming weeks.

Middlesbrough Manager Welcomes The Door For Chelsea Youngster Patrick Bamford

Patrick Bamford

Centre-forward Patrick Bamford’s role at Crystal Palace has become irritating for his parent club, Chelsea. After just two senior club appearances for the youngster in the Premier League, the Chelsea prospect is looking to get off of the bench and back to scoring goals. Bamford rejected a move that would have him stay at Championship side Middlesbrough for the entire 2015/16 campaign. Hoping to gain first team experience on loan at Palace, Bamford unbeknownst, finds himself on the bench week after week.

With his talent being wasted away and his fitness becoming delicate, Chelsea have had enough of seeing their promising prospect waste away on the bench and they have threatened to take the 22-year-old back from Palace to find him a club that is more suitable.

This is where speculation has turned to Middlesbrough manager, Aitor Karanka. When the Spaniard was asked whether or not he’d welcome back Bamford after leaving the club in the summer, Karanka said, “I told [Bamford] that he would have the doors open for him always [at Boro].” Bamford claimed the Player of the Year award for the Sky Bet Championship in 2014/15, scoring 19 times for Middlesbrough (17 in the league) with 39 appearances.

While this is only speculation, Middlesbrough would be wise to try and get Bamford back on a loan deal. Not only would he play first team football straight away, but he has already built chemistry with a familiar supporting cast. However, if Chelsea decides to bring back the striker, do not be surprised if they give him a spot with the first team at Chelsea. While Chelsea is star studded and experienced, their lack of form could entice Mourinho to hang on to the striker and use him off the bench as a motivator to his squad. In the uncertain days of Mourinho’s reign at Chelsea, he could look for anything (or anyone) to help his squad improve.

If however, Chelsea decides to loan Bamford out to another club, Middlesbrough will surely be the favorite to win him back. Middlesbrough currently sit in second spot in the Sky Bet Championship and with the sure foot of the young striker, Bamford could be just the player they need to challenge for the Championship title this season.

What’s Going On With Arsenal, Chelsea And Other English Teams In The Champions League?

The English are having a tough time in Europe at the moment. Three points apiece for Chelsea and Manchester City put them both third on their respective groups; two losses for Arsenal mean they are at the bottom of Group F; and although Man United’s group look fairly equal, manager Louis van Gaal has said his team needs to improve dramatically if they want to progress further in the competition.

What are the odds of having an English team reach the final, let alone make it further than the group stages? Let’s take a look at all our men in the Champions League and the issues that might be holding them back.

Arsenal with Security Issues

Following their second embarrassing defeat of the tournament to Olympiacos at the Emirates, Arsene Wenger’s men will not be feeling great about their chances. Since the Champions League began in 1955, a total of 110 teams have lost their opening two games, of which just 9 have ever managed to qualify. Arsenal’s hopes are therefore very slim indeed: just 8.2% in fact!

What’s been going so wrong for the team that currently sit second in the Premier League? It has to be said that Arsenal got particularly unlucky in their Olympiacos match: a horrifying error from the new Colombian keeper, David Ospina, kept the team on the back foot for most of the game, which for an inherently attack-minded team turned out to be fatal.

Concentration was rattled, and although they didn’t concede many chances they were hit extremely hard when they did. No one could have predicted that 3-2 loss though – in fact many bookmakers confidently backed them for big 3-0 and 4-0 wins!

They face Bayern on 20th October, which is certainly not going to be an easy match to claw their way back into this competition (they are currently 7/2 to win this game).

Chelsea Lacking Managerial Leadership

Chelsea have not had a good season so far in either Leagues. They made a poor start in their attempt to retain the Premier League title, and crashed 2-1 at Porto (Jose Mourinho’s former club, who he made his name with). This leaves them with a mountain to climb if they want to get back into Europe.

Mourinho in particular has faced an onslaught of criticism over these recent events, accused of sending out mixed messages and not inspiring solid leadership within his squad. Ultimately, it seems like the manager is just as confused as the pundits as to why his team are performing so poorly – he’s clearly not used to losing!

Manchester City Under Pressure

City may have not finished outside of the Premier League’s top three since 2010, but they are struggling to translate this domestic success overseas. After losing their first contest, they were forced to come from behind after Borussia Monchengladbach converted an early chance, and just managed to kick start their Champions League campaign with a 2-1 win.

But although some, including Joe Hart, may not be pleased with the performance, the win does put them in a good position. City have often misfired in this championship, but have won four of their last nine Champions League away games. The away win is therefore a high possibility (with odds of 8/13) and would put them in good stead to qualify second.

It all depend if City – who go into this match as the favourites – can hold it together when the pressure is on. Are their players up to it? Recent games against Tottenham and West Ham perhaps suggest not.

Manchester United Fatigued?

City’s rival have also found it tough to get off the mark this competition. Although the latest home win against Wolfsburg got them the three points they badly needed, Man United looked anything but Champions League winners – they also had to come from behind, and then just managed to hang on towards the end.

Louis van Gaal, although pleased with the result, knows his side needs to improve. He has suggested that the players are simply suffering from fatigue: this was their sixth in 18 days, after all. Since then they already suffered a crushing defeat at Arsenal in the Premier, but now have just one game prior to their showdown against CSKA Moscow on 21st October. Let’s hope this break puts them in good stead to take the 13/8 win.

Revealed: Jose Mourinho’s Midfielder To Play For The Next Few Games

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has now confirmed that Ruben Loftus-Cheek will start the next few games after the international break for his side. The 19-year-old midfielder is presently part of the England Under-21 squad to play against Kazakhstan in Coventry in the upcoming week. However, speculations say that he could be part of the Blues’ squad to face Aston Villa on his return to domestic football, which attracts more interest from the Chelsea fans across the globe.

ruben-loftus-cheek-1427006102-2348639

The west London side are not performing well at the moment and are currently placed at 16th in the points table, with the Portuguese boss all set offer the bright young star a chance to establish himself in midfield.

He stated, “Clearly, it is time. Not to play four, five or six kids – some are not ready – but Ruben is a case where he’s more ready, and if everything goes normal during the next two weeks, he’s a player to start the next game and a run of matches, to try and get that stability as a first-team choice. Not to save the season. The profile of the moment and the profile of the young players makes it a good moment.

In difficult moments, what’s the best thing? Can the most experienced players cope better? When I don’t play John Terry everyone says: “Why don’t you play the captain? The team needs the captain’s leadership and personality. With Ruben, it is exactly the same. Ruben, Matic, Fabregas or Ramires? Who can cope the best with the pressure? Maybe with the situation so negative for us, the young player feels less pressure than when the team is top of the league.”

Manchester City vs Chelsea – Preview, Lineups, Match Facts And Prediction

Manchester City vs Chelsea

Sunday 16th August, 16:00

ea

Manchester City host the champions this weekend in an early title-race crunch match. City got off to a flying start, beating West Brom 3-0 on Monday night, whilst Chelsea stuttered to a 2-2 draw at home to Swansea.

Manchester City will be hoping that Yaya Toure can repeat his Monday night performance where he bagged a brace. Toure made 66 passes in the opposition half, the second highest total in the division. He is clearly trusted by his teammates too as he received 78 passes, the fourth highest in the Premier League. Toure has enjoyed some good battles with Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic in the past and this weekend should be no different. Matic covered the ninth most ground in the league on the opening weekend, running 11.72km. In addition, Matic won four tackles, ranking him 11th in the division.

David Silva was in inspired form against West Brom and was in fact the only player to have completed more passes in the opposition half than teammate Yaya Toure, with an incredible 79 passes. Silva set up four goalscoring opportunities for his teammate, and could well prove to be a tricky customer for the Chelsea defence. At the heart of that Chelsea defence is John Terry and Gary Cahill, who have been in 19 duels between them – and look sure to add to that total this weekend.

Eden Hazard completed by far and away the most dribbles of any Premier League player last season and has started this campaign in a similar fashion. Hazard sits third in the dribbling rankings, on five successful dribbles, after the first weekend. Bacary Sagna started in the fullback role often occupied by Pablo Zabaleta last season. Should Sagna start again, he will need another strong performance against the reigning PFA Player Of The Year. Sagna won 100% of his tackles last week as well as succeeding in 95.2% of his passes.

Cesar Azpilicueta will occupy what has now become his regular spot at left back. He will likely come up against his Spanish compatriot Jesus Navas. Azpilicueta last week managed to complete 100% of his tackles, and made five important clearances for Chelsea. Navas covered an impressive 11.59km last week, with a top speed of 32.2km/h, and his energy is likely to challenge Azpilicueta. Navas is 16/1 to score first with 888sport.com.
