We may be only be a month into the new Premier League season, but many will feel the writing is already on the wall for newly promoted Reading.
After four games, they have picked up just one point from a possible twelve, and sit at the bottom of the league at this stage. They need to start picking up points fast to make sure they don’t fall too far behind the teams above them, but their current points haul isn’t necessarily a true reflection of their chances of Premiership survival.
They did earn a well deserved point on the opening day against Stoke though, and when you consider their three defeats since then have came against Chelsea, Tottenham and West Brom, it’s not all doom and gloom for Brian McDermott’s men. Those three teams are highly likely to finish in the top half of the table after the thirty-eight games are complete, so Reading fans don’t need to start worrying just yet.
They have a very presentable trip to Loftus Road next time out to take on Queens Park Rangers, who sit just above the Royals in nineteenth place, and if they can get a positive result there, it will give the players and fans alike a massive boost for the campaign ahead.
It really is survival of the fittest in England’s top division, and Reading will have to battle hard to ensure they steer clear of relegation come May, but with the top flight becoming ever more unpredictable each season, who knows what three teams will take the plunge.
