The Manchester United, Liverpool Rivalry

There’s a big game this Sunday afternoon and while veteran Manchester United players like Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs insist Liverpool are still the club’s biggest rivals it is the title of ‘England’s Most Decorated Side’ the two club’s fight over, rather than the Premier League title.

Liverpool are famous for dominating the 1970’s and 1980’s, domestically and in Europe, but have been unable to win a league title since their 1990 triumph in First Division. Their Manchester rivals, however, have completely dominated the Premier League era, starting in 1992.

United’s 12th Premier League success in 2011 took them one in front of Liverpool’s record of 18 and made it 41 major titles compared to Liverpool’s 44. While United’s remarkable Premier League domination will surely see them surpass Liverpool’s massive haul the Anfield club and their fans will be able to boast about their 5 European Cup successes.

Liverpool and Manchester United will still be considered huge rivals while they are contesting who has the bigger trophy haul but as for in the league, surely Manchester City are considered the closest team to Sir Alex Ferguson’s for now.

In the Premier League era the closest Liverpool have been to lifting the trophy is second in 2001/02, when for the only time in the Premier League they finished above United, and 2008/09 when Rafa Benitez’s side were runners up to, you guessed it, Manchester United.
