Back in the summer, QPR were keen on bolstering their backline in order to stave off the threat of relegation and remain another Premier League club for a year at least. The west London side, as a result, made a number of acquisitions, bringing in the likes of Esteban Granero, Julio Cesar and Jose Bosingwa.

The R’s, on top of their summer signings, moved for an experienced centre-back in the form of Michael Dawson. The Tottenham Hotspur defender was supposedly out of favour under Andre Villas-Boas, as a result of his high defensive line, and a deal was accepted to see him depart White Hart Lane.

After the move fell through, as a result of Dawson failing to agree personal terms or Younes Kabouk’s knee injury depending on who you believe, the defender saw his first team opportunities limited.

With Jan Vertonghen, William Gallas and Steven Caulker ahead of him in the pecking order, rather than kick up a fuss ala John Terry at Chelsea, Dawson worked hard to force his way back into the Spurs starting XI and has once again reemerged as the club’s starting centre-back and captain.

The player himself admitted it was down to his work on the training pitch and insistence on forcing his way into Villas-Boas’ first team and it’s once again beginning to pay off with Dawson now the first player on the teamsheet.
