As Sir Alex Ferguson and Paul Scholes made their final Old Trafford appearances today, the country stood and watched the two Manchester United legends say their goodbyes.
It took an 87th Rio Ferdinand winner to secure all three points in their final home game against Swansea City, and as they paraded round the pitch with the Premier League trophy players from United’s past were giving their opinion on social media outlet Twitter. Here are a select few.
Former United bench warmer Michael Owen (@themichaelowen) shared his emotional side: I don’t care who you support, if Ferguson’s departing speech didn’t leave a lump in your throat I don’t know what will. Absolute legend. The Premier League is going to be such a different place next season with the managerial merry go round in full swing. Got to be a first that none of the managers who finished 1st, 2nd and 3rd in The Premier League will be in charge of their respective team.”
Ex-Reds goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar (@vdsar1970): “Anybody interested about the result #Manutd game today or all about farewell of both great men??”
An older face now in the shape of Viv Anderson (@Anderson_Viv): “Atmosphere in here is brilliant. All for you Sir Alex. Glad to say I was your first :)”
It wasn’t just former Manchester United players who were tweeting furious. Match of the Day presenter and former England striker Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) said of Ferdinand’s late winner: “A late winner from Manchester United. Sort of sums up an era.”
I think we can all wish the pair good luck in retirement and congratulate on Fergie and the Ginger Prince on long, successful careers. The Premier League won’t be the same without them.
