Fans clash in Spanish capital after Atletico Madrid beat Real Madrid to claim Copa del Rey (video)

Atletico Madrid picked up the 2012/13 Copa del Rey after snatching a 2-1 win over Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeua last night, but not without controversy.

Both Cristiano Ronaldo and Jose Mourinho saw red as the game continued into extra time, but it was Atleti man Miranda who stole the silverware from Los Blancos in front their own fans.

However, despite their team doing them proud on the field, Atletico fans let them down away from it. Fans of Diego Simeone’s men clashed with police into the early hours after the game, throwing missiles at the local bobbies and burning everything they could get their hands on.

Passion ran high after Atleti beat Real for the first time in 14 years and scuffles broke out all over the Spanish capital. Police were also heavy handed, as you can see by the way they went about using their batons.

Whatever your views on football hooliganism or football violence, scenes like this are ugly and put a bad name on football fans in general. After winning a major trophy it seems a bit of a pathetic way to celebrate, although the reasons for the fighting is unknown.

Tempers flared on the pitch with comings together riling supporters, but it is a shame that the aftermath has put a dampener on what has been a great season for Rojiblancos.
