What Sort Of Season Will Real Betis Have?

It’s fair to say that Real Betis have had an incredibly busy summer so far. They’ve plucked free agents from around the world and picked up players on very cheap deals. In fact, the small £5 million they’ve spent has seen a massive 13 players in total come into the club. However, they have had to replace 17 players that have either been sold, loaned or returned to their parent club – a total of 30 changes in personnel. An incredible figure, and as an Arsenal fan whose club have done very little in terms of incomings, I have been kept entertained by the business of Betis.

Now, Betis haven’t had the best start to their new La Liga campaign as they have suffered two defeats so far – they lost 2-1 to Real Madrid and then 2-1 to Celta Vigo a few days ago. However, they have had a bit more success in the Europa League as they beat FK Jablonec 2-1 last week. They will play the return leg tonight and will hope that the home support will see them through.

Betis lost one of their best players at the start of the summer. Benat signed for Athletic Bilbao for a sum of just over £7 million. Losing such a key player from their midfield, along with Jose Canas, who was also a key member, is tough to cope with but they have signed players that can play in that position. Xavi Torres and Joan Verdu joined the club not long ago and they cover the big gap left by the players that departed.

They have a good, quality squad of players that are capable of obtaining more Europa League football next season. Pepe Mel is a great coach that will really get the best out of the new players and his existing ones. I feel that Betis will finish in a Europa League spot again but they will find it even more difficult this season should they get past FK Jablonec to get to the group stages, as they will have that to focus some of their attention on.

I’m excited, and other fans are excited. Let’s go Balompie.
