Is This Man The Best Centre-Back In Europe? A Statistical Look

World class central defenders are few and far between in Europe, with the same names repeated when asked the question. Mats Hummels, Vincent Kompany and Giorgio  Chiellini are the trio who often arise, with the likes of Andrea Barzagli, Thiago Motta and even Raphael Varane mentioned just behind. But is this man the best central defender in Europe? I think so.

Bayern Munich’s Dante has been extraordinary since he made his move from Borussia Monchengladbach last year and is in my opinion has established himself in that top bracket. The number one spot is arguable.

Last season the Brazilian averaged five defensive actions per game and completed 91% of his passes. His ball control is incredible and he’s the perfect player to deploy beside a rough and ready centre-back in the mould of Nemanja Vidic.

Remarkably, Dante won 65% of his personal duels, which dilutes to 42/51 of his tackles being successful, 9/12 of his take ons being completed and 68/95 of his headers won.

The way he bursts forward is brilliant to watch, and he’s been superb so far this season as well. All three of his tackles have finished with him snatching the ball, while he has made 19 clearances, four interceptions and two blocks.

Is he the best centre-back in Europe? Who do you think?
