Amidst reports that Real Madrid will offer Liverpool Karim Benzema plus £20m for the services of Luis Suarez in January, here are three reasons why I feel the Reds should reject the advances from the La Liga outfit.
1) SAS
Luis Suarez has combined brilliantly with Daniel Sturridge since he returned from his lengthy ban for biting Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic. Between the two they have scored 14 goals in just 13 appearances, and to disrupt that in January would surely dash any hopes that Liverpool may have of winning the Premier League.
The fluidity at which the two move forward with is brilliant to watch, but they always know where each other will be operating. The pair are the two to watch in the Premier League right now and to split them up would be criminal.
2) Benzema
Following on from my last point, Benzema is a totally different player to Suarez and may not link with Sturridge as effortlessly as Suarez. Benzema has always functioned as a lone striker and enjoys making space for himself, but also enjoys playing on the shoulder of the defence.
Rodgers is a fan of the 4-2-3-1 formation with the flexibility in the front four, but Benzema has done nothing to suggest that he would be comfortable taking up a role just behind the forward or on either flank.
3) Flexible
Which rolls us onto our next reason – the flexibility that Suarez offers. Although not many enjoy him playing there, Suarez can operate as a number 10 if needs be and is a natural in the wider areas. There are not many who thrive at playing in all these positions and Liverpool may well struggle to find anyone who fits in as well as Suarez.
