German footballers are traditionally renowned for their steely determination and a desire to win at all costs, so it’s no wonder why the Germany national side and the top divisions in the country are doing so well. In my opinion, Arsenal’s German influence is a huge reason why the Gunners sit top of the Premier League as once again Per Mertesacker guided them to three points this afternoon.
Mertesacker is a player who has almost everything in his locker. Although his huge frame restricts his movement and speed, but he more than makes up for it with his positioning and combative style of play.
During a tense game against Cardiff today, Mertesacker made six successful clearances, won all three of the headers he went up for and made an interception inside the Cardiff half.
He also had three efforts at goal, which is not a common trait for a centre-back, and one crashed off the woodwork with 20 minutes to go.
His influence in the side is huge. He’s constantly shouting advice and driving his team-mates on and he also injects a sense of calmness when in possession. Today Mertesacker made 58 passes, 54 of which met their intended target giving him a 93% success rate.
Mertesacker’s presence in the team was so impressive today and I don’t see his form slowing down anytime soon.
