THREE Things We Learned From Chelsea’s Win At Southampton

Chelsea got their new year started in impressive fashion as they thrashed Southampton 3-0 on their own patch today, despite the Saints having a number of chances themselves. It was an exciting game which had both fans on their feet, but the Blues returned to London with the three points. Here are three things we learned from the game.

1) Chelsea happy to take people on

Jose Mourinho likes his teams to play a particular way. The Blues are happy for teams to attack them, as when they win the ball they can spring forward into the gaps that appear. This approach often leads to players having to take people on and it showed away at Southampton today.

Chelsea attempted 31 takes ons during the game and were successful in 23 of those.

2) Possession isn’t everything

The amount of passes in a game does not necessarily give you an advantage in a game, as we learnt today. During the 90% minutes Southampton attempted 461 passes, whereas Chelsea just 392 with the former completing 80% and the latter 73%.

Torres also completed little over 30% of his individual passes, but was the one who opened the scoring.

3) Willian can be super sub

The Brazilian came off the bench today and was instrumental. He scored a goal from his only attempt and even completed three tackles. His desire to drive forward with the ball at his feet is brilliant to watch.
