Chelsea finished this season without any silverware, despite the return of Jose Mourinho. Although they were able to reach the Champions League semi-finals and finished third in the Premier League, the board cannot be too pleased with the lack of trophies. The Portuguese manager is staying calm, though, and has revealed that there will be no radical overhaul at Stamford Bridge this summer, but he does need a few fresh faces in the squad.
Reports have him as saying, “We don’t need a new spine, the structure is there. We need a couple of players to help the team get to a certain level immediately.
After that, if somebody wants to leave, somebody has to come but basically our work in the summer isn’t a big amount. It’s about the right choices and trying to be successful.”
I think he is correct.
Chelsea had the best defence in the entire Premier League and have already added to that, with Saint Etienne centre-half Kurt Zouma coming into the club for the start of next season.
They also added to an already-stable midfield, with Nemanja Matic returning for a second stint.
The only real place they are lacking is up front, where Samuel Eto’o, Demba Ba and Fernando Torres have failed to provide the goods.
Now is a time for the west London club to remain calm. They need a new striker, possibly a full-back and another holding midfielder should Luiz and John Obi Mikel leave, but other than that they are a formidable outfit.
