Liverpool Still Chase Argentine Striker, As Deadline Day Approaches

Liverpool were boosted by the return of Daniel Sturridge on Saturday, who scored just twelve minutes after coming on against West Ham United at Anfield. Despite the England international making his return this week, The Reds have been in the hunt to sign another striker desperately after summer signings Mario Balotelli and Ricky Lambert have failed to make a mark with the club.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has been keen on signing Argentina international Ezequiel Lavezzi, for some time now. Reportedly, even Italian side Napoli were in the hunt for the World Cup finalist but now have recently ruled themselves out of a late swoop for Lavezzi.   The Argentina international who is expected to leave French Champions Paris Saint-Germain this month, after reportedly falling out of favour with manager Laurent Blanc, may make a move to the Premier League, for a new challenge. Liverpool are now the clear favorites to sign him before the deadline day.

Napoli’s Sporting director Riccardo Bigon admitted the striker’s former club has enough attacking talent and does not feel the need to add another forward, this soon. In an interview, when asked about his club’s transfer market plans, Bigon told Sky Italia,

“Though we love the player and his qualities, we are well stocked in the attacking department, both in terms of quantity and quality. Lavezzi is not a necessity for us.

Liverpool, who are set to face Everton at Goodison Park in their next Premier League game, know the importance of winning the Merseyside derby, if they wish to play in the Champions League next season. At the moment, Brendan Rodger’s side is placed at seventh on the points table with 38 points, four points behind fourth spot Southampton, who were defeated by Swansea, on Sunday evening.
