With the knockout stages of the Champions League fast approaching, and the identities of most qualifiers now known, I decided to take a quick look at three teams who may seem to be favorites to win the illustrious cup.
While Aaron Ramsey had had a terrific pre-season to add to his incredible closing stages of last seasons, even the most optimistic Arsenal fan could not have predicted at the beginning of the season the immense scoring form that he would be in. The question now is, can he keep it up for the entire season?
Yesterday, out of sheer fun and boredom, I sat down and tried to come up with a list of the top five players in the English Premier League. I found out that due to the immense quality of players currently plying their trade in the English League, that it is VERY hard to be able to muster such a list without any hitches in the decision making process along the way. Below is my results (which I am sure will garner a few moans and groans, if not swears):
This season Arsenal have been absolutely brilliant, facing various different challenges and overcoming them one way or another, barring a few mishaps here and there. Therefore, it would be hard to pick Arsenal’s three best games this season, but I thought I would give it a try.
Avid Premier League watchers might have dismissed Southampton’s top-four surge as a merely good form, especially having seen recent similar surges fade away as the season progressed – examples of this may include Newcastle and to some extent Hull City before them. However, this season, it seems as if Southampton are here to stay.
For a long while now, it has been said that Arsenal need a world-class centre-forward who can either replace Olivier Giroud, or in some instances dovetail with him. Certainly, Arséne Wenger’s attempt to loan Chelsea’s Demba Ba on deadline day as well as his continuous pursuits of both Gonzalo Higuain and Luis Suarez seemed to confirm that he had the same thoughts. So, who would be the perfect player for this role? Robert Lewandowski? Jackson Martinez? Luis Suarez? Not quite, for me.
